Ten Books I Almost Put Down But Didn't

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke & the Bookish

Ten Books I Almost Put Down But Didn't
(But probably should have. For reasons.)

1. Crave (The Clann #1) by Melissa Darnell
Crave (The Clann, #1)

I should have quit while I was ahead with this series, but I didn't. While I did enjoy the character of Tristan, this series as a whole just wasn't for me.

2. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
Before I Fall

I hated the ending, plain and simple.

3. Requiem by Lauren Oliver.
Requiem (Delirium, #3)

Do you see a pattern here? After reading several books from this author, I've come to the realization that we are just not a good fit. Dragging me through three extremely stressful books and then leaving me with an ending that is "open to reader interpretation" makes me angry and distrustful. Why would I want to invest any more of my time and energy into your stories if I can't trust that you're going to give me an ending that actually makes sense.

3. Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy by E. L. James.
Fifty Shades Trilogy (Fifty Shades, #1-3)

Yes, I read these and am now scarred for life as a result. If you want to know the reason why I read them, you can find it here. However, I am unabashedly opinionated so proceed with caution.

4. Cinders & Sapphires by Leila Rasheed
Cinders & Sapphires (At Somerton, #1)

This was touted as Downton Abbey, which is fine if you watch/like that show, but I don't watch T.V., so yeah.

5. City of Fallen Angels (TMI #4) by Cassandra Clare
City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4)

This series had me hook, line and sinker until this book. From there it turned into a paranormal soap opera.

6. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1)

I wanted to love this book and I tried to, but Ethan's whiny POV ruined it for me.

7. Tumble & Fall by Alexandra Coutts
Tumble & Fall

This book was not what I was expecting and I continued reading because I was hoping it would end well. It didn't.

8. Breathe Into Me by Sarah Fawkes
Breathe Into Me

Too much drama for my taste.

9. Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire.
Beautiful Disaster (Beautiful, #1)

I know people love this book and love Travis Maddox but here's my issue with it (and other books with male characters like him), if these guys were REAL, they would have restraining orders brought against them. Why? Because guys who behave this way are not sexy, they are scary.

10. Allegiant (Divergent #3) by Veronica Roth
Allegiant (Divergent, #3)

As a DIE-HARD Divergent fan, (I've dressed up as a Dauntless initiate numerous times) this was a book I could NOT wait to read. However, after doing so, I was depressed and almost gave up reading altogether.

  1. Lots of these books I haven't picked up at all for the reasons you've listed. Right there with you on the LO books.

  2. YAY! I did ones I should have put down as well. Allegiant and Fifty Shades were on there. I read the whole series because I bought the boxset cheap and was determined to read them all. I am scarred too and HATE those books, stupid, pointless Twilight fan fiction!!! Beautiful Disaster is also on there because I HATE Travis, he's abusive and controlling and I don't feel like women should be swooning over that guy. Nice picks :) Here's my TTT.

  3. I can't believe I forgot about Before I Fall, that is a book that I almost put down too. It just reminded me too much of the movie Groundhog Day. For some reason I hate too much repetition.
I agree with Requiem, I wanted more from the ending. I was disappointed and left wondering "what else happens?"
Allegiant made me really sad. I didn't read another book for days after finishing it.

  4. Thank you Jen! I feel so much better for not liking some of these or sticking with my decision not to read a particular series even though EVERYONE was reading it. If I think something will be too disturbing, I won't read it because it stays with me and bothers me for a long time. Reality can be depressing enough without me ruining what little free time I have reading fiction that will make me upset. ;)

  5. I should have put Allegiant down. Instead it got hurled across the room when I finished. The Mortal Instruments series drives me nuts. I enjoyed the first 3, hated the 4th, and still went back for more. The 5th one rehooked me. *shakes fists at no one in particular* Here are my picks http://wp.me/pzUn5-20n

  6. Excellent post! I've recently decided to post DNFs on my goodreads. I think it's fine to realize that sometimes we experience series fatigue or just plain don't like a story that other readers (friends) loveloveloved.

  7. Regarding Beautiful Disaster: THANK YOU. Freaking abusive &*$%. Thank.You. I'm getting mad all over again! Only 1 star review I've ever given. *high five*

(I never read 50 Shades, but I have a feeling we would pretty much be on the same page on that one.)

  8. So I haven't read ANY of these. Judging by your thoughts, I suppose that's a good thing LOL. I read Divergent and really enjoyed it, but once I found out the ending of Allegiant, I knew I wouldn't be finishing the series. Such a bummer. :/
