Review & Giveaway: Secret (Elemental #4) by Brigid Kemmerer

Secret (Elemental, #4)Author: Brigid Kemmerer (she is made of awesome)

Nowhere is safe. Not even home…

Nick Merrick is stretched to the breaking point.

Keep his grades sky-high or he’ll never escape his hometown.
Keep his brother’s business going or the Merricks will be out on the street.
Keep the secret of where he’s going in the evenings from his own twin—-or he’ll lose his family.

Keep his mind off the hot, self-assured dancer who’s supposed to be his “girlfriend’s” partner.

Of course there’s also the homicidal freak Quinn has taken to hanging around, and the Elemental Guide counting the hours until he can try again to kill the Merrick brothers. There’s a storm coming. From all sides. And then some.

Nick Merrick, can you keep it together?

Regardless of whether or not you agree with Nick's choice, this was a really good story about love, acceptance and figuring out how to just be yourself.

Nick has always put his family first and as Elementals, the Merrick brothers have gotten really good at keeping secrets. Nick is no different. Except the secret he's been living with could not only change the way his brothers see him, but how he sees himself and for Nick, that's a risk he isn't sure he's willing to take. *hugs Nick*

Quinn is no stranger to secrets either and she's more than willing to help Nick keep his if it means she can keep hers. But the truth has a funny way of revealing itself even if we don't want it too and Nick and Quinn both learn that help can come from the most unlikely sources. (I love how Quinn learns that she is worth so much despite the way she's treated at home and at school, and I really liked the person who shows her that. REALLY.LIKED. :D)

This story, like it's predecessors, has a seamless dual POV, is fast paced, action packed and full of feels. It makes a fantastic to the Elemental series!

I had the pleasure of hanging out with Brigid a few weeks ago at an event in West Virginia and she was kind enough to sign some books for me. Books that I am now sharing with you.

ISBN: 9781908844934

I'm so excited for this because it's been a loooong time coming! I love how well the cover captures the essence of the story, which I've read and is made of awesome! The author isn't too shabby either. ;)

About the Book
One girl. Fifty-seven lives. Endless ways to die.
For as long as 17-year-old Alex Wayfare can remember, she has had visions of the past. Visions that make her feel like she’s really on a ship bound for America, living in Jamestown during the Starving Time, or riding the original Ferris wheel at the World’s Fair.

But these brushes with history pull her from her daily life without warning, sometimes leaving her with strange lasting effects and wounds she can’t explain. Trying to excuse away the aftereffects has booked her more time in the principal’s office than in any of her classes and a permanent place at the bottom of the social hierarchy. Alex is desperate to find out what her visions mean and get rid of them.

It isn’t until she meets Porter, a stranger who knows more than should be possible about her, that she learns the truth: Her visions aren’t really visions. Alex is a Descender – capable of traveling back in time by accessing Limbo, the space between Life and Afterlife. Alex is one soul with fifty-six past lives, fifty-six histories.

Fifty-six lifetimes to explore: the prospect is irresistible to Alex, especially when the same mysterious boy with soulful blue eyes keeps showing up in each of them. But the more she descends, the more it becomes apparent that someone doesn’t want Alex to travel again. Ever.

And will stop at nothing to make this life her last.

Review & Giveaway: Bitter Sweet Love (The Dark Elements #0.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Bitter Sweet Love (The Dark Elements, #0.5)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publication: December 1, 2013
By: HarelquinTeen
5 Stars!
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

In a sizzling prequel novella to her new series THE DARK ELEMENTS, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout draws readers into the extraordinary, irresistible world of Wardens and demons.

Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining balance between good and evil. He was her everything...right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn't help that Jas's father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.

And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again...

Thank you Harlequin Teen and Jennifer L. Armentrout for this eARC.

OHMYGARGOYLES, this was so good!

What I Loved: When I think of gargoyles, I tend to think of the creepy little pewter statues my husband was so fond of when we first met. Not anymore. Jas and Dez are anything but creepy in this intriguing new series about the ghoulish looking guardians.

Jas has spent the past three years trying to put Dez behind her. They used to be BGFs (Best Gargoyles Forever) and were even supposed to be mated, but then he left and broke her heart. No calls, no texts, no random fly-bys, nothing.  When Dez returns and claims Jas as his own, she is not exactly ready to fly off to make little gargoyle babies. Dez will have to prove himself to Jas and he only has seven days to do it.

I loved how the "real" world and the spiritual realm, where evil formerly presided, are combined and we get to see humans interacting with the mythical creatures.

We glimpse a few of the characters from Book One - White Hot Kiss (2/2014), but this novella is a story all it's own.

What Left Me Wanting More: Nothing. It was the perfect segway into the next book.

Final Verdict: Exciting start to a new series! Aliens, Demigods, Nephilim and now Gargoyles...I'm pretty sure Jennifer L. Armentrout could write a book about spiders and find a way to make them swoonworthy. ;)

COVER REVEAL: Copper Ravens (The Copper Legacy Series #2) by Jennifer Allis Provost

Copper Ravens (The Copper Legacy Series #2) by Jennifer Allis Provost

Publication: May 20, 2014
By: Spencer Hill Press/Spence City

Sara should be happy.

She has what every girl wants: a man who loves her, a beautiful home, and wealth beyond imagining. She rescued her brother from the Peacekeepers, destroyed the Iron Queen, and doesn’t have to go to her boring job any more.

And yet… Sara still doesn’t know if her father is alive or dead. Her mother hides in the garden, brooding about her missing husband. Her sister, the Inheritor of Metal, is scared of her own shadow, and her brother spends his days fighting and gambling. To add to Sara’s misery, the new queen (gold, of course) is more than a bit crazy, she misses her life in the Mundane world, and, worst of all, Micah wants to have children. A lot of them.

As Sara wavers between happiness and homesickness, a conspiracy emerges against the Raven clan, implicating them in a plot to dethrone the Gold Queen. How can Sara prove her family’s innocence, and become the consort Micah needs her to be, without losing herself in the process?

Jennifer Allis Provost is a native New Englander who lives in a sprawling colonial along with her beautiful and precocious twins, a dog, two birds, three cats, and a wonderful husband who never forgets to buy ice cream.
As a child, she read anything and everything she could get her hands on, including a set of encyclopedias, but fantasy was always her favorite. She spends her days drinking vast amounts of coffee, arguing with her computer, and avoiding any and all domestic behavior.

COVER REVEAL: Seeking Her (A Finding It Novella) by Cora Carmack

Cora Carmack fans, Jackson's novella is coming!
The cover is a little different from the others in this series but really captures the essence of Kelsey's character.

Take a look...

A few months after being honorably discharged from the military, Jackson Hunt is still struggling to adjust back to the real world. He needs to get a job and find a sense of normalcy if he’s going to keep his own demons at bay. The job that falls into his lap, though, is anything but normal.

Bodyguard (and baby-sitter) to spoiled-rich-girl Kelsey Summers isn’t exactly what he’d been looking for, but it’s a chance to travel, to get away from the home that has felt stifling ever since his return. It would be a pretty sweet gig if it weren’t for the fact that Kelsey’s father doesn’t want Kelsey to know she’s being followed. Hunt feels guilty (and a little bit creepy) as he watches her from afar. She’s vibrant and infuriating, exciting and reckless, mysterious and familiar. When he sees her falling into the same patterns that he suffered years ago, he decides it’s time to stop watching and help her instead. But getting to know her is more difficult than he thought, especially because the more he knows her,the more he wants her.

So what do you think of the cover?
Are you excited to read Jackson's story?

BLOG TOUR & INTERVIEW: Racing Savannah (Hundred Oaks #4) by Miranda Kenneally

Howdy! This is my stop on the RACING SAVANNAH Blog Tour!

 About the Book
Author: Miranda Kenneally
Publication: December 3, 2013

5 Stars!
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

*I need a pair of those yellow boots!*
*And a horse*
*And a Jack Goodwin Barbie*

They’re from two different worlds.

He lives in the estate house, and she spends most of her time in the stables helping her father train horses. In fact, Savannah has always been much more comfortable around horses than boys. Especially boys like Jack Goodwin—cocky, popular and completely out of her league. She knows the rules: no mixing between the staff and the Goodwin family. But Jack has no such boundaries.

With her dream of becoming a horse jockey, Savannah isn’t exactly one to follow the rules either. She’s not going to let someone tell her a girl isn’t tough enough to race. Sure, it’s dangerous. Then again, so is dating Jack…

Thank you Miranda Kenneally for another great addition to the Hundred Oaks Series! I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'll read anything you write.

What I loved: The covers in the Hundred Oaks series are some of my favorites. They have clean, bright colors with clear images that accurately represent the story within. And by not showing the model's faces, it allows readers to imagine the heroine/hero anyway they want to!

Twelve Things I Loved About Racing Savannah

1. It's hard to go wrong with a story about horses. The relationship Savannah has with Star was so sweet and her back story broke my heart.

2. If GQ Cowboy were a thing I would be a lifetime subscriber. ;)

3. Miranda Kenneally doesn't do "insta-love", but she does write "insta-attraction" and pretty freaking well, I might add. I enjoyed watching Savannah try to fight off her attraction to Jack. (I would've lasted about as long as it took him to say, "Hello.")

4. Savannah is a pint-sized bada*s full of sass, but she isn't a harda*s. I loved that she wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted despite the risks. I wanted to high five her when she stood up to Jack and I wanted to hug him when he finally stood up to her. (Also, I just kind of wanted to hug Jack, period.)

5. The fathers in this story are present and involved and even though the relationships aren't necessarily easy, they are positive.

6. The social class issue/differences felt believable.

7. I am a die hard Matt Brown fan ("Things I Can't Forget") but, SWEET BUTTERMILK BISCUITS Jack Goodwin is a close second. *fans self* He is a fantastic blend of swoon, swag and southern gentleman.

8. There is a scene in the middle of the book that ties in some of the characters from previous Hundred Oaks books and I got all choked up over seeing them again. I also wanted to go back and reread all of "their" stories again.

9. I think everyone needs a Rory in their life!

10. I'll admit, I thought I knew how this would end, but I was wrong and happily so.

11. Lollipop addictions.

12. Star Wars sheets. That is all!

What Left Me Wanting More: Not a darn thing.

Final Verdict: Horses, hot guys and a girl with sass, RACING SAVANNAH is a winning combination and I couldn't put it down!

I'm so excited to have Jack Goodwin with me on the blog today!  If you haven't had a chance to meet Jack yet, you will soon.  He's the resident heartthrob in RACING SAVANNAH. *cue the drooling*

Jack, I'm sure you get a lot of horse related questions, so I thought we'd talk about some other things instead.

Jen: Describe Savannah in three words.
Jack: Feisty. Beautiful. Determined.

Jen: If you had to plan the perfect date, where would you go and what would you do?
Jack: I have a thing for the County Fair that comes once every fall. I love grabbing cotton candy and then screaming on the Tilt-a-Whirl and then kissing on the Ferris wheel. The only problem is that if my little sister catches wind I'm going to the fair, she'll beg to go, too. And you can't bring a little sister on a date with you... Or can you? I bet girls would find it very sweet that I love my sister and take care of her. And maybe I'd get a kiss from my date. But then I'd be using my little sister. And my mom would find out and yell at me. Gah, dating is confusing!

Jen: Favorite lollipop flavor? *wink wink*
Jack: Cherry! (That's Savannah's favorite flavor too.)

Jen: What song do you have on repeat right now? (This can be on your iPod, in your truck or in your head.)
Jack: That Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" video has been seared into my brain. And I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

Jen: Something you are afraid of?
Jack: When my father retires, I'm supposed to take over Cedar Hills Farms, which has been in my family since the Civil War. I've been training my entire life for this, but what if I screw up the finances somehow and we lose the farm and all the people who work for us lose their jobs?

Jen: Favorite Halloween costume growing up?
Jack: Buzz Lightyear to the rescue!

Jen: Cupcakes or Pie?
Jack: What a silly question. Cupcakes, of course! Especially those cookie dough cupcakes made by Jen Cupcake Girly. Hers are the best.  <-- I heart you, Jack. To infinity and beyond!

Thanks Jack!

Alienated (Alienated #1) by Melissa Landers

Alienated (Alienated, #1)Author: Melissa Landers
Publication: February 4, 2013
By: Disney-Hyperion
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads
5 Stars!

Interplanetary relations have never been more exciting! The first in a funny, romantic YA sci-fi series.

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

This was SUCH A FUN book to read, so I thought I'd do something different my review.

Soundtrack: The songs listed are ones that inspired me while I was on this intergalactic voyage of reading awesome.

For the record, I'd take a pinch on the neck from Mr. Aelyx any day. (If you don't get this Beastie Boys reference, then I can't help you.)

Character Casting: Here is what I imagine the two main characters look like...

 And this...
Aelyx aka "A-licks"

What I Loved: (Besides Aelyx? Just kidding.) It's rare that I find a book I'm unable to put down. Told from a dual POV, ALIENATED is the perfect blend of science fiction, creative world-building and witty humor. It also has a sizzling romance that is out of this world! (Pun completely intended. You're welcome.)

Cara and Aelyx, (aka "Cah-ra", and "A-licks") are both well developed and highly entertaining life forms. They start out as strangers and watching Aelyx adapt to life on Earth and the lengths that Cara goes to in order to make him feel welcome are as hilarious as they are heartwarming.

 "It's chocolate. You'll love it."
"That's what you said about Skittles. I vomited a rainbow afterward."
I also love that Cara has a blog! You know, for obvious reasons. :)

The romance was a slow build filled with lots of sweet and funny moments, and there was one scene in particular that made me do this...

Like any good space story, there are always people on both sides of the galaxy who are not quite ready to gather around the spacefire and sing kumbaya. Throw in a little interplanatary deception, a few fear mongers and it's a recipe for disaster. Cara and Aelyx find themselves not only in a fight for their love, but a fight for lives and her home planet too. I was on the edge of my seat with my heart in my throat right up to the very end and I CAN NOT wait to see what happens next!

What Left Me Wanting More: Is it 2015 yet? Because I NEED book two!

Final Verdict: A fantastic voyage you don't want to miss!
