Review + Giveaway: All Chained Up by Sophie Jordan

Series: All Chained Up (Devil's Rock #1)
Author: Sophie Jordan
Publication: March 29, 2016
By: Avon
Amazon | B&N | Goodreads

There are bad boys and then there are the men of Devil’s Rock . . .

Some men come with a built-in warning label. Knox Callaghan is one of them. Danger radiates from every lean, muscled inch of him, and his deep blue eyes seem to see right through to Briar Davis’s most secret fantasies. But there’s one major problem: Briar is a nurse volunteering at the local prison, and Knox is an inmate who should be off-limits in every way.

Knox feels it too—a shocking animal magnetism that drives him to risk his own life to protect Briar’s. Paroled at last, he tries to resist her. She’s too innocent, too sweet, and she has no idea what Knox is capable of. But a single touch can lead to a kiss—and a taste . . . until the only crime is denying what feels so right . . .

“When the prison doors are open, the real dragon will fly out.”—Ho Chi Minh

Only Sophie Jordan could get me to read a prison romance.

Unique setting, great tension, engaging characters and lots of steam. Lots of it.

Knox and Briar are both strong characters and watching their story unfold was a lot of fun! The supporting cast was very interesting too, and I'm really looking forward to Reid's story.

Great start to a new series!

Some of The Parts by Hannah Barnaby

Author: Hannah Barnaby
Publication: February 16, 2016
By: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Amazon | B&N | Goodreads

Sometimes bad things happen, and we are not the same when they are over.

For months, Tallie McGovern has been coping with the death of her older brother the only way she knows how: by smiling bravely and pretending that she's okay. She’s managed to fool her friends, her parents, and her teachers so far, yet she can’t even say his name out loud: “N—” is as far as she can go. But when Tallie comes across a letter in the mail, it only takes two words to crack the careful façade she’s built around herself:

Two words that had apparently been checked off on her brother’s driver’s license; two words that her parents knew about—and never confided to her. All at once, everything Tallie thought she understood about her brother’s death feels like a lie. And although a part of her knows he’s gone forever, another part of her wonders if finding the letter might be a sign. That if she can just track down the people on the other end of those two words, it might somehow bring him back.

Hannah Barnaby’s deeply moving novel asks questions there are no easy answers to as it follows a family struggling to pick up the pieces, and a girl determined to find the brother she wasn’t ready to let go of.

*I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

“A touching depiction of the pain of grief” — Kirkus Reviews

“Barnaby’s elegant, well-paced novel stands out from others examining the death of a loved one both for its understated writing and for its penetrating exploration of the outer limits of grief and guilt… A deeply affecting depiction of moving on after a great loss.” — Publisher’s Weekly, starred review

My Thoughts

I had a feeling this book was going to break my heart, and it did. Tallie's grief for her brother Nate is palpable. It consumes every facet of her life until it's all she can feel. When she decides to go looking for the recipients of her brother's organs, you know it's not going to end well (for her), but all you can do (as a reader) is hang on for the ride.

Tallie eventually crashes and burns, and it's heartbreaking to read. But she is not without hope. Surrounded by a support system of people who love and care about her, and who want to see her heal and move on, Tallie begins the process of piecing her life back together again.

"Sometimes bad things happen, and we are not the same when they are over."

And that's okay.

Read it.

RELEASE DAY: The Power (Titan #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

The Power (Titan Series #2)
Spencer Hill Press
Releasing February 23, 2016
New Adult Paranormal

With any great change, there is always strife, and the Covenant University has become the frontline between pure-bloods who want the Breed Order reinstated and the half-bloods who want the right to control their own destinies.

Fate has other plans.

The violence is escalating and war between the races seems inevitable, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Hyperion may be out of commission, but Josie and Seth know they have only earned a reprieve. Seth must get Josie fully prepared, which means controlling her newfound abilities, and they need to find the other demigods before the Titans do.

But the gods are sensing a greater threat.

Only one thing is more dangerous than a bunch of starved Titans, and that’s an out-of-control Apollyon. The aether in Josie is drawing Seth in deeper, and when lust mixes with love and gives way to power, he knows being close to her is not only dangerous to her, but to everyone around them, but letting her go requires a level of selflessness that just isn’t Seth’s style.

The paths taken in the past are becoming the roads of the future.

Just as chaos breaks out, familiar faces from the past return, complicating the already strained bond between Josie and Seth, and when the danger from the Titans erupts with devastating consequences, the dark allure of power calls to Seth again, but this time Josie might not be able to pull him back.

And when the struggle between power and love becomes the deadliest battleground, there may be no salvation.

The Return (Titan Series #1)

New Adult Paranormal
The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…

It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

BLOG TOUR: FIRSTLIFE by Gena Showalter

Welcome to Jenuine Cupcakes, this is my stop on the FIRSTLIFE blog tour!

Tenley “Ten” Lockwood is an average seventeen-year-old girl…who has spent the past thirteen months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers, but her refusal to let her parents choose where she’ll live—after she dies.
There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.

In the Everlife, two realms are in power: Troika and Myriad, longtime enemies and deadly rivals. Both will do anything to recruit Ten, including sending their top Laborers to lure her to their side. Soon, Ten finds herself on the run, caught in a wild tug-of-war between the two realms who will do anything to win the right to her soul. Who can she trust? And what if the realm she’s drawn to isn’t home to the boy she’s falling for? She just has to stay alive long enough to make a decision…

~ Author Q & A ~

JC: Who is your favorite character in FIRSTLIFE?
GS: I’d have to go with Ten Lockwood, the driving force behind the book. She is a fighter, will do whatever it takes to survive. And she doesn’t just do what’s good enough to get by but actively does her best. She walked through the fire and came out singed but stronger.

JC: If Tenley had a theme song, what would it be and why?

GS: Fight Song by Rachel Platten, because it is a single word that changes the course that was set for Ten’s life.

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion

JC: How many books are planned in the series?

GS: There will be three! Firstlife, Lifeblood and Everlife.

JC: Do you plot, outline or write by the seat of your pants?
GS: With Firstlife, I did a bit of both. I planned the beginning –girl being tortured in an asylum -- and the end –don’t want to spoil it LOL -- but let the characters drive me through the middle.

JC: Cookies, cupcakes, or pie?
GS: Chocolate chip cookies would trump red velvet cupcakes but not chocolate chip cupcakes, but neither would trump a homemade pecan pie.

BLOG TOUR + GIVEAWAY: The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner

Welcome to Jenuine Cupcakes, I'm excited to be kicking off The Serpent King blog tour today!

Okay, not really. Because snakes are the spawn of Satan. But still.
I AM glad you're here

~ About the Book

(On sale March 8, 2016 / $17.99 / Ages 14 & up) by singer-songwriter Jeff Zentner

In this emotional story, the son of a Pentecostal preacher faces his personal demons as he and his two outcast friends try to make it through their senior year of high school in rural Forrestville, Tennessee, without letting the small-town culture destroy their creative spirits and sense of self. Drawing from his own roots growing up in the south, Zentner’s debut is haunting, heartbreaking, and hopeful, and is in the vein of beloved novels The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Looking for Alaska, and Eleanor & Park.

Dill has had to wrestle with vipers his whole life—at home, as the only son of a Pentecostal minister who urges him to handle poisonous rattlesnakes, and at school, where he faces down bullies who target him for his father’s extreme faith and very public fall from grace.

He and his fellow outcast friends must try to make it through their senior year of high school without letting the small-town culture destroy their creative spirits and sense of self. Graduation will lead to new beginnings for Lydia, whose edgy fashion blog is her ticket out of their rural Tennessee town. And Travis is content where he is thanks to his obsession with an epic book series and the fangirl turning his reality into real-life fantasy.

Their diverging paths could mean the end of their friendship. But not before Dill confronts his dark legacy to attempt to find a way into the light of a future worth living.

~ Praise for THE SERPENT KING ~

"One of Paste Magazine’s “10 Most Anticipated YA Books of 2016”

“Zentner’s prose wraps you up like a warm, Southern hug and packs the punches of a sweaty country brawl...The Serpent King is a debut you won’t be able to resist or forget. The Southern Boy in me savored every syllable and the reader in me fell in love with every page.”
—John Corey Whaley, author of Where Things Come Back, winner of the Michael L. Printz Award and William C. Morris Award

“The Serpent King gripped me in its coils and kept me turning pages late into the night. A triumph of love and dignity."
 —Stephanie Perkins,
New York Times bestselling author

“[T]his sepia-toned portrait of small-town life serves as a moving testament to love, loyalty, faith, and reaching through the darkness to find light and hope. Zentner explores difficult themes head on—including the desire to escape the sins of the father and the fragility of happiness—while tempering them with the saving grace of enduring friendship."
— Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“Thorough characterization and artful prose allow readers to intimately experience the highs and lows of these three friends . . . Recommended for fans of John Green and Rainbow Rowell."
— School Library Journal

“Characters, incidents, dialogue, the poverty of the rural South, enduring friendship, a desperate clinging to strange faiths, fear of the unknown, and an awareness of the courage it takes to survive, let alone thrive, are among this fine novel's strengths. Zentner writes with understanding and grace—a new voice to savor.”
 — Kirkus, Starred Review

“A musician himself, Zentner transitions to prose easily in his debut, pulling in complex issues that range from struggles with faith to abuse to grief. Refreshingly, this novel isn’t driven by romance—though it rears its head—but by the importance of pursuing individual passions and forging one’s own path. A promising new voice in YA.”
— Booklist

“A moving debut novel of friendship and forgiveness that will stick with you long after you’ve finished it, I’m calling it now… The Serpent King is already one of my favorite books of 2016.”
— Eric Smith for BookRiot

~ My Thoughts

When I picked this up, I was anticipating a coming-of-age story that had a dose of weird, a sprinkling of romance and a side of happily-for-now. I didn't get that. And I'm glad. What I got was a story about friendship, forgiveness, and at times, survival. Jeff Zentner does an excellent job of driving home the importance of figuring out who you are, what you want, what you believe to be true and why. No one else can do that for you.

~ About The Author ~

Jeff Zentner lives in Nashville, Tennessee. He came to writing through music, starting his creative life as a guitarist and eventually becoming a songwriter. He’s released five albums and appeared on recordings with Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Thurston Moore, Debbie Harry, Mark Lanegan, and Lydia Lunch, among others.

Now he writes novels for young adults. He became interested in writing for young adults after volunteering at the Tennessee Teen Rock Camp and Southern Girls Rock Camp. As a kid, his parents would take him to the library and drop him off, where he would read until closing time. He worked at various bookstores through high school and college.

He speaks fluent Portuguese, having lived in the Amazon region of Brazil for two years.

On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others.

In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.

Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.

Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.

Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.

Over the coming weeks, he and the other horsemen--Conquest, Famine, and Death--are brought together by a beautiful but frustratingly secretive girl to help save humanity from an ancient evil on the emergence.

They fail.

Now--bound, bloodied, and drugged--Gideon is interrogated by the authorities about his role in a battle that has become an international incident. America's First Daughter by Stephanie Dray & Laura Kamoie

America's First Daughter
Author(s): Stephanie Dray, Laura Kamoie

Publication: March 1, 2016
By: William Morrow Paperbacks
Amazon | B&N | Goodreads

In a compelling, richly researched novel that draws from thousands of letters and original sources, bestselling authors Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie tell the fascinating, untold story of Thomas Jefferson’s eldest daughter, Martha “Patsy” Jefferson Randolph—a woman who kept the secrets of our most enigmatic founding father and shaped an American legacy.

From her earliest days, Martha "Patsy" Jefferson knows that though her father loves his family dearly, his devotion to his country runs deeper still. As Thomas Jefferson’s oldest daughter, she becomes his helpmate in the wake of her mother’s death, traveling with him when he becomes American minister to France. And it is in Paris, at the glittering court and among the first tumultuous days of revolution, that she learns of her father’s liaison with Sally Hemings, a slave girl her own age.

Patsy too has fallen in love—with her father’s protégé, William Short, a staunch abolitionist intent on a career in Europe. Heartbroken at having to decide between being William’s wife or a devoted daughter, she returns to Virginia with her father and marries a man of his choosing, raising eleven children of her own.

Yet as family secrets come to light during her father's presidency, Patsy must again decide how much she will sacrifice to protect his reputation, in the process defining not just Jefferson’s political legacy, but that of the nation he founded.

*I received an eARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

I don't read a lot of Historical Fiction, but a few months ago, I tripped and fell down the rabbit hole known as Hamilton (the musical) and haven't been able to get enough of the Revolutionary War period since.

AMERICA'S FIRST DAUGHTER is engrossing, emotional, and kept me turning the page well into the night. The extensive research the authors have done is evident, but blends together beautifully with fiction, creating a story that will satisfy even the most critical of historians while also appeasing readers (like me), who came for the chocolate drops and the hint of romance.

Read it.

Quick Fire Reviews: Midnight Revenge & Dare To Run

Midnight Revenge (Killer Instincts #7)
Author: Elle Kennedy
Publication: February 2, 2016
By: Signet
Amazon | B&N | Goodreads

From the USA Today bestselling author of Midnight Captive, the latest Killer Instincts novel is “off-the-charts-hot”* romantic suspense that takes readers into the heart of an enigmatic mercenary...

Out of all the stone-cold mercenaries in Jim Morgan's black ops organization, Derek “D” Pratt is the most intimidating. He is tight-lipped and covered in tattoos, and even the other guys on his team are afraid to ask him about his past. D’s been off the grid for years, but after his teammate Sullivan is mistakenly captured in his place, D is forced to come out of hiding and face his demons.

When D lands in Mexico, he’s ready to risk everything to save his friend. To complicate matters, Sofia Amaro, a feisty doctor whom D had a one-night stand with months ago, has tracked him down. And in an instant she’s unintentionally caught up in his life-threatening rescue mission.

Now D must extract not one but two people from the most violent world he's ever encountered. And one of them is carrying his child...

*A copy of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

Gritty and intense, with a double shot of steam and a side of kick-you-in-the-feels. (This is part of a series, however, it can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone.)

D is not the warm and snuggly type, but if he's on your side, he's there for life. I enjoyed watching his relationship with Sophia unfold and how she was able to bring out the softer side of him. I really like the redemption aspect each of these stories offers. It isn't always easy or pretty, but it's there for the taking.

His past choices, the mistakes he'd made... He didn't dwell on them, because regret was a waste of time. When he made a decision, he was fully prepared for the consequences.
