AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Throne of Glass & Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

*I received these audiobooks from Brillance Audio in exchange for honest reviews*

Throne of GlassSeries: Throne of Glass #1
By: Brillance Audio
Publication: September 2, 2014

In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

Audio: 4.5 Stars
I've been on an audiobook binge this year and I'm happy to say, this one (along with it's sequel, Crown of Midnight) is one of the best on the market. Everyone involved makes this an entertaining experience, especially Elizabeth Evans, who does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life and giving them each their own distinct "voice".

Story: 3.75 Stars
I'm not a huge fan of fantasy, but there are a few books that have been able to change my mind, and Throne of Glass is one of them.

What I Liked: The writing, world-building and overall story. Celaena wasn't at all what I was expecting. Instead of being this hardened assassin whose closed off emotionally, she's smart, witty, and---kind. Her love of all things shiny and girly made her more endearing (to me, anyway) and I enjoyed watching how she interacted with the other characters. Particularly Dorian and Chaol. (I'm glad I had the audio for the correct name pronunciations otherwise I would have messed them up royally.)

The pacing of the story felt a bit slow at first, and I wasn't crazy about the idea of a potential love triangle. Once I reached the end though, it was clear that Throne of Glass is the stage setter for the books that follow. Like a calm before the storm and I was REALLY glad I had the next book on deck.

Crown of MidnightSeries: Throne of Glass #2
By: Brillance Audio
Publication: September 2, 2014

"A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.

It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend."

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena's world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie...and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

Audio: 4.5 Stars
As I said before, this is one of the best on the market and Elizabeth Evans continues to give each character their own distinct "voice".

Story: 4 Stars
I get it now. The hype, the fandom, the feels, I GET IT!

The Celaena I was looking for in book one shows up with dagger's unsheathed and heads Literally. Like, across the floor for all the court to see. It's gross and badass all at the same time. I loved it.

The romance heats ups like WHOA (I loved THAT too.) and then all Hades breaks loose. (Not so much love there. Just saying.)

Death, betrayal and heartbreak mixed together with beautiful prose, jaw-dropping revelations and sprinkled with my shredded feels left me feeling like this when it was over.

So, thanks for that, Sarah J. Maas.

No really.

THANK YOU! I can't wait to see what happens next!

BRING ON HEIR OF FIRE! (I might need someone to hold my hand though.)

PRE-ORDER + #5Greats: The Law of Moses by Amy Harmon

The Law of Moses
Expected Release: 11/27/14
Cover design by: Hang Le
Hosted by: Alpha Literary Services

If I tell you right up front, right in the beginning that I lost him, it will be easier for you to bear. You will know it’s coming, and it will hurt. But you’ll be able to prepare.

Someone found him in a laundry basket at the Quick Wash, wrapped in a towel, a few hours old and close to death. They called him Baby Moses when they shared his story on the ten o’clock news – the little baby left in a basket at a dingy Laundromat, born to a crack addict and expected to have all sorts of problems. I imagined the crack baby, Moses, having a giant crack that ran down his body, like he’d been broken at birth. I knew that wasn’t what the term meant, but the image stuck in my mind. Maybe the fact that he was broken drew me to him from the start.

It all happened before I was born, and by the time I met Moses and my mom told me all about him, the story was old news and nobody wanted anything to do with him. People love babies, even sick babies. Even crack babies. But babies grow up to be kids, and kids grow up to be teenagers. Nobody wants a messed up teenager.

And Moses was messed up. Moses was a law unto himself. But he was also strange and exotic and beautiful. To be with him would change my life in ways I could never have imagined. Maybe I should have stayed away. Maybe I should have listened. My mother warned me. Even Moses warned me. But I didn’t stay away.

And so begins a story of pain and promise, of heartache and healing, of life and death. A story of before and after, of new beginnings and never-endings. But most of all...a love story.

~ Preorder Excerpt ~

“I haven’t cried today,” I realized suddenly, and Moses gave in and sat down beside me, his size and heat making me curl against him and lean my head on his shoulder. He ran a big hand over my hair and left it cradled against my face. I turned my cheek and kissed his palm and felt him shudder. Then he wrapped both of his arms around me so I could bury my face in his chest and he could rest his head on my hair.

“If you keep being sweet I will break my new record,” I whispered. “And I’ll cry again.”

“Crying from sweetness doesn’t count,” he whispered back, and I felt the moisture prick my eyes, just as I’d predicted. “Gi used to say happy tears watered our gratitude. She even had a cross-stitch that said as much. I thought it was stupid.” I could hear the smile in his voice.

“Ah . . . so Gi was a believer in the five greats.” I pressed my lips against his throat, wanting to get as close to him as I could.

“Gi was a believer in all good things,” he rubbed his cheek softly against my hair, nuzzling me.

“Especially you.”

“Even me,” Moses said, lifting his hand to my chin.

AudioClip + The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

The Retribution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #3)Series: Mara Dyer #3
Publication: November 4, 2014
By: Simon & Schuster for Young Readers
Goodreads | Amazon

Mara Dyer wants to believe there's more to the lies she’s been told.

There is.

She doesn’t stop to think about where her quest for the truth might lead.

She should.

She never had to imagine how far she would go for vengeance.

She will now.

Loyalties are betrayed, guilt and innocence tangle, and fate and chance collide in this shocking conclusion to Mara Dyer’s story.

Retribution has arrived.

The final installment of the MARA DYER trilogy has been two years in the making, took me an entire week to finish, and I'm STILL feeling like this:

Not that I'm complaining.

One of the things I LOVED about UNBECOMING was how it thoroughly messed with head. (RETRIBUTION exceeds this.)

EVOLUTION left me rocking back and forth in a corner. (RETRIBUTION grossed me out on more than one occasion, because blood, blood and more blood. BUT it also left me with a satisfied smile on my face.)

Going into RETRIBUTION with three BURNING questions, all of which were answered in under thirty seconds (on release day) when the book slipped out of my grasp and landed on the floor with the Epilogue staring up at me.

Self meet Spoilers.

In a way though, I'm glad I spoiled the ending for myself. I probably would have flipped to the end anyway. The stress of reading it blind might have killed me. I'm not even kidding. At least I knew what was coming, was happy with it, and could better enjoy the story as a whole.

One of my fears with this book, as is with every final book in a series now thanks to one that shall not be named, was that Michelle Hodkin wouldn't stay true to her charcters or the original story, but she did.

For that Michelle, I say,

While this is primarily a YA blog, I do, on occasion, stumble across some pretty fantastic adult books that I just HAVE TO TELL YOU ABOUT!

The FBI/US Attorney Series by Julie James is one of them.

The writing is smart, the characters intelligent and engaging, (especially the female MCs) and I walk away feeling like I've learned something in addition to reading a really great romance!
You should definitely check these out. Be sure to enter the GIVEAWAY too!

Something About You (FBI/US Attorney, #1)SOMETHING ABOUT YOU (FBI/US Attorney #1)

Fate has thrown two sworn enemies...

Of all the hotel rooms rented by all the adulterous politicians in Chicago, female Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Lynde had to choose the one next to 1308, where some hot-and-heavy lovemaking ends with a death. And of all the FBI agents in Illinois, it had to be Special Agent Jack Pallas who gets assigned to this high-profile homicide. The same Jack Pallas who still blames Cameron for a botched crackdown three years ago—and for nearly ruining his career.

Into each other's arms...

Work with Cameron Lynde? Are they kidding? Maybe, Jack thinks, this is some kind of welcome-back prank after his stint away from Chicago. But it's no joke; the pair is going to have to put their rocky past behind them and focus on the case at hand. That is, if they can cut back on the razor-sharp jibes—and smother the flame of their sizzling-hot sexual tension.

A Lot like Love (FBI/US Attorney, #2)A LOT LIKE LOVE (FBI/US Attorney #2)

The FBI wants her cooperation...

As the daughter of a billionaire and the owner of the city's top wine store, Jordan Rhodes is invited to the most exclusive parties in Chicago. But there's only one party the FBI wants to crash: the charity fundraiser of a famous restaurateur, who also happens to launder money for the mob. In exchange for her brother's release from prison, Jordan is going to be there—with a date supplied by the Bureau.

Agent McCall just wants her...

As the top undercover agent in Chicago, Nick McCall has one rule: never get personal. This "date" with Jordan Rhodes is merely an assignment—one they're both determined to pull off even if they can't be together for five minutes before the sarcasm and sparks begin to fly. But when Nick's investigation is compromised, he and Jordan have no choice but to pretend they're a couple, and what starts out as a simple assignment begins to feel a lot like something more.

About That Night (FBI/US Attorney, #3)ABOUT THAT NIGHT (FBI/US Attorney #3)

He's Playing Games

Though Rylann Pierce tried to fight the sparks she felt for billionaire heir Kyle Rhodes the night they met, their sizzling chemistry was undeniable. But after being stood up on their first date, Rylann never expected to see him again. So when she finds herself face-to-face with Kyle in a courthouse nine years later, she's stunned. More troubling to the beautiful assistant U.S. attorney is that she's still wildly attracted to him.

But She's Making The Rules

Just released from prison, Kyle Rhodes isn't thrilled to be the star witness in a high-profile criminal case—but when Rylann comes knocking at his door, he finds she may be the one lawyer he can't say no to. Still as gorgeous and sharp-tongued as ever, she lays down the law: she doesn't mix business with pleasure. But Kyle won't give up on something he wants—and what he wants is the one woman he's never forgotten.

*This one is my favorite in the series so far!
Rylann doesn't put up with anything and this is how I imagine Kyle looks in all his flannel shirt wearing glory.

Love Irresistibly (FBI/US Attorney, #4)LOVE IRRESISTIBLY (FBI/US Attorney #4)

A former football star and one of Chicago’s top prosecutors, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cade Morgan will do anything to nail a corrupt state senator, which means he needs Brooke Parker’s help. As general counsel for a restaurant company, she can get a bug to the senator’s table at one of her five-star restaurants so the FBI can eavesdrop on him. All Cade has to do is convince Brooke to cooperate—and he’s not afraid to use a little charm, or the power of his office, to do just that.

A savvy businesswoman, Brooke knows she needs to play ball with the U.S. Attorney’s office—even if it means working with Cade. No doubt there’s a sizzling attraction beneath all their sarcastic quips, but Brooke is determined to keep things casual. Cade agrees—until a surprising turn of events throws his life into turmoil, and he realizes that he wants more than just a good time from the one woman with whom he could fall terrifyingly, irresistibly in love . . .

It Happened One Wedding (FBI/US Attorney, #5)IT HAPPENED ONE WEDDING (FBI/US Attorney #5)

After a humiliating end to her engagement, investment banker Sidney Sinclair is done with commitment-phobic men. But when her sister winds up engaged after a whirlwind courtship, she’s thrown in to close contact with exactly the kind of sexy playboy she wants to avoid—the gorgeous best man. She’s stuck with him, for better or worse, until her sister walks down the aisle, but that doesn’t mean she has to give in to his smooth advances, no matter how tempting they are…

Special Agent Vaughn Roberts always gets his man on the job and his woman in bed. So Sidney’s refusal to fall for his charms only makes him more determined to win over the cool and confident redhead. Only what starts out as a battle of wills ends up as a serious play for her heart. Because the one woman who refuses to be caught may be the only one Vaughn can’t live without…

But once she agrees to take on his sister's case, she's as determined to win as ever—even if that means teaming up with Ford…

Investigative journalist Ford Dixon is bent on finding the man who got his sister pregnant and left her high and dry. He's willing to partner with Victoria, despite the fact that the beautiful brunette gets under his skin like no other woman. BLOG TOUR: Wild (The Ivy Chronicles #3) by Sophie Jordan

Welcome to Jenuine Cupcakes, this is my stop on the WILD blog tour!

Wild (The Ivy Chronicles, #3)Series: The Ivy Chronicles #3
Publication: November 18, 2014
By: William Morrow
Genre: New Adult/18+
Amazon | Goodreads
5 Face Fanning Stars!

A good girl goes fabulously bad in the final book in New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s sexy New Adult romance series, in which three Ivy League suite-mates seek higher knowledge of just how far they can go.

Months after her boyfriend dumped her, Georgia can still hear the insults he hurled at her. Boring. Predictable. Tame. Tired of feeling bad, she’s ready to change her image, and go a little wild. What better way to prove her ex wrong than a hot night of sexual adventure at the secret campus kink club?

In the shadowy den of the kink club, she unexpectedly runs into Logan Mulvaney, her friend’s little brother. A player extraordinaire too hot for his own good, he may be younger, but the guy is light years ahead when it comes to sexual experience. Now he’s telling her to go home—“good girls” don’t belong here!

Georgia is tired of having others define her. She’s going to teach Logan a lesson he won’t forget—one white hot, mind-wrecking kiss . . . that leads to another . . . and another . . . and. . . . Realizing she’s way in over her head, Georgia runs.

Only Logan won’t let her go. Everywhere she goes he’s there, making her want every inch of him. Making her forget who she is. Who he is. And just how wrong they are for each other.

My first reaction to
WILD was...

And then I was like...
Because I completely swooned over Logan Mulvaney and felt like a total creeper for doing so!
Not really.
Okay, maybe a little.

Having read and enjoyed the first two books in this series, I thought I knew what to expect when it came to Logan Mulvaney. I mean, the boy has earned himself quite the reputation, and to a certain extent, he is every bit the bad boy Georgia thinks he is.

But I was wrong.

Like most people, there is more to Logan and his lips story than meets the eye! Is he perfect? No. But he IS a good guy, a REALLY good guy.
Georgia is used to following the rules and playing it safe. Getting involved with Logan, the eighteen year old little brother of her BFF's boyfriend who is still in high school has BAD IDEA written all over it--in neon pink glitter paint.

And yet.

There's something about Logan that Georgia can't seem to resist.
(My inner me who is single and only twenty years old agrees.)
The more time she spends with him, the more Georgia fears losing. Her friends' respect, her family's financial support, maybe even herself. But Logan Mulvaney is used to getting what he wants and he wants Georgia. He puts himself on the line for her time and time again, but will it be enough?

While I understood why Georgia made the choices she did, there were many times I wanted to tell her to put her big girl panties on! And then there was Logan...
I LOVE when characters turn out even better than I hoped they would be, and that's what Logan does. He pursued Georgia in a way that was sweet, funny and a whole lotta...

Fans of the Ivy Chronicles will NOT be disappointed!

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Burying Water by K.A. Tucker

Burying Water (Burying Water, #1)Series: Burying Water #1
Author: K.A. Tucker
Published: 10/7/2014
By Simon & Schuster Audio
Narrator: Elizabeth Louise, Josh Goodman
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads
4 Stars!
The top-selling, beloved indie author of Ten Tiny Breaths returns with a new romance about a young woman who loses her memory—and the man who knows that the only way to protect her is to stay away.

Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives—but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him?

Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried.

The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

* I received this audiobook from the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

Story: This was my first K.A. Tucker book. I enjoyed the dual POV and timeline and I'm not sure I've come across a Russian Mafia theme in NA yet, which made for a unique and interesting story.

I didn't buy into the immediate connection between Jesse and Water. In fact, I thought it was a little too "insta-ish", but it got better as the story unfolded. The tough love family dynamic between the Welles' felt completely relateable and I enjoyed watching them interact. Ginny was a tough old biddy, but her story was one of heartbreak and survival and I LOVED her! Watching the relationship between her and Water was painful and beautiful all at the same time.

I liked how this story addresses domestic violence and shows the reasons why some women choose to stay even if it doesn't make sense.

My only real qualm was how quickly Victor's storyline wrapped up. We spend the majority of the book waiting for the other shoe to drop and it never really does. Victor gets explained away far too easily to be believable in my opinion.

Audio: Elizabeth Louise has a high voice which not only makes her sound young, but I found it slightly grating at times. Josh Goodman does a decent job bringing Jesse to life, however, neither seemed able to really differentiate between their multiple characters.
