Planning how to be the best Empress when the time comes. Plotting to get the Emperor to postpone her wedding to his son Verex for as long as possible. Preparing for the Engagement Ball her soon-to-be father-in-law insists on throwing, as well as the possibility of seeing Arin again for the first time since agreeing to the Emperor's deal. She tries to distract herself with games in the Palace, visits with Jess and even spends time with her betrothed. But the closer the ball gets, the more anxious Kestrel grows. Her hope that Arin will come and her disappoint that he may not are palpable. E...

REALLY good with hair braids and ball gowns and proposals and kissing and---and---and then the poo hits the fan! The rebellion begins, secrets are revealed, and enemies declared. Again. Both are willing to do whatever it takes to protect the ones they love, but at what cost?  Favorite Scene: This is a tie between Kestrel having her hair braided before the ball and THAT MOMENT in the carriage. The wall between Kestrel and Arin continues to crumble, one Bite and Sting tile at a time, while the tension grows stronger. Neither one of them seems to really understand what is taking place between them, but other people have started to notice.  I've read this book multiple times now and the scene in Irex's library STILL makes my pulse race! The moments before the dual also pluck at my heartstrings because it's so obvious (to the reader) that Kestrel craves her father's approval and yet he continues to hold it just out of her reach.  Favorite Scene: In the library at Irex's house. Oh, and the line for Arin starts behind me. ;) The Winner's Curse was my introduction to the amazingness that is Marie Rutkoski and her gorgeous writing. I'm not usually a fan of high fantasy, HOWEVER, I will read anything she writes! In these first few chapters, we watch Kestrel and Arin go from total strangers with pre-determined roles in society (she is Master to his Slave), to discovering they might actually have a few things in common. Even if neither of them is ready, willing or able to admit it--yet.  In Kestrel's world, she has two choices in life; get married or join the military. She has no desire to become a wife and she lac...
