Vigilance. The mission
to safeguard Nikki Youngblood depends on the fragile alliance of two
half-angel, half-human guardians, both struggling with intense feelings
for the girl who has been assigned to their care. Mace, steadfast and
deeply in love, wants to protect Nikki at all costs, while Raven's
loyalty to Nikki finds him advocating for her independence and battling
his own darker inclinations. At the same time, Nikki finds it harder and
harder to choose between the two heavenly beings she may never have.
Dangers intensify, and tensions between Mace and Raven flare as the
purpose of their mission becomes clear. Can their defenses hold up to
master manipulator Damon Vessler and the powerful secret he holds
regarding Nikki's heritage? Can anyone protect Nikki from her true
purpose and destiny?
Thank you to Edelwiess and Zonderkidz for this ARC. I recently read the first book in this series, Halflings, so that I would know what was going on in this sequel and I'm glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed book 1 but I had some issues with this one. The love triangle that has formed feels contrived and over the top to me, so much so, I almost quit reading out of frustration. Both Mace and Raven have pros and cons but it seems pretty obvious to everyone that Mace is the right choice. (This is coming from the reader who almost always sides with the "underdog" or "bad boy" because I want so badly for him to be redeemed by love.) A few plot twists were predictable (at least to me) and I kept waiting for a major cliff hanger but there wasn't - just more of the same which was disappointing.
Here's why I will still "push" this series even though it doesn't fall into my "LOVED IT SO HARD" category...this book is clean - no language, no "sexy" parts, BUT still has plenty of swoon worthy moments to get your racing. It's also action packed with the spiritual battle, good vs. evil element and is filled with fantastic moral lessons!
