Penguin Audio presents Half Bad by Sally Green, a breathtaking debut novel about one boy's struggle for survival in a hidden society of witches.

You can't read, can't write, but you heal fast, even for a witch.

You get sick if you stay indoors after dark. You hate White Witches but love Annalise, who is one. You've been kept in a cage since you were fourteen. All you've got to do is escape and find Mercury, the Black Witch who eats boys. And do that before your seventeenth birthday. Easy.

Sally Green lives in north-west England. She has had jobs (paid and unpaid) and even a profession but at last has found the time to write down the stories she used to only be able to daydream about. She likes to read, walk in the country and would like to drink less coffee. Half Bad is her first novel.

Thank you Penguin Audio for sending this in exchange for an honest review.

This is a unique review for me because I actually didn't care for the story itself, but I thought the audio was beautifully done and well worth the listen!

The Story: I DNF'd the book at first but decided to give it another shot because the audio version was reeling me in. The narrative took some getting used to and the abuse that Nathan encounters made me uncomfortable. Plus, the story didn't really feel like it was going anywhere. Once the end came, I was left feeling like, "That's it?" but not in a good way. It just wasn't the book for me.

The Audio: This is one of the best audio productions I've heard. Carl Prekopp does an excellent job of bringing all of the different characters to life through various voice changes. Quite a few scenes are pretty gruesome and Carl does them so well, I was audibly gagging. (To the enjoyment of my 9YO son).

Final Verdict: Definitely worth the listen!

Comments

  1. I was not a fan of the book either. Like you, I couldn't see where this story was going. I mean, I felt bad for Nathan but...then what? His dad's bad; the White witches hate him...so? The audio version sounds like it was really well done, though!
