I really enjoyed the story, especially the old school Red Dawn vibe it had going on! I still remember how scared I was to go to school after watching that movie, convinced enemy soldiers were going parachute onto the playground and take me hostage.

I
liked how opening chapters laid the groundwork for the series
and wasn't simply a bunch of flashbacks. I never felt like I was confused
about what was going on or where I was in the timeline. I loved Amber and Rylen, and her family is the best! It was nice to see a diverse, multi-generational family under one roof.
The camping scene made me laugh!

In this first installment, action, tension and relationships take center stage, which adds a layer of authenticity to the overall story. Don't get me wrong, I love kissing and everything else that goes along with romance, and it's there simmering below the surface, but the world is literally falling down around these characters. They're focused on survival, as they should be.
